Congratulations on your engagement!   Now is the time for celebration and to begin planning your wedding.  Whether you're envisioning a grand celebration or a cozy destination elopement, there are many details to consider.  Start by thinking about the memories you want to capture during this special time.  Regardless of your wedding's scale, hiring a skilled photographer is essential to document every heartfelt moment, ensuring you have beautiful images to cherish forever.

Time to Research

Once your date is set, it’s crucial to start looking for wedding photographers.  Typically, photographers get booked anywhere from 6 months to a year in advance.  I understand how challenging it can be to narrow down your options; the photography industry is home to numerous talented individuals, and deciding who to collaborate with can feel overwhelming.

You may have come across advice from wedding publications like THE KNOT or Martha Stewart Weddings on selecting a photographer.  While there are many helpful articles available, some unfortunately focus solely on cutting costs, suggesting practices that undermine the value of quality photography, such as not providing meals for your photographer during a full-day event.  It’s important to emphasize that, while budget considerations are valid, investing in a reputable professional ensures you receive quality work that reflects the beauty of your wedding day.

Where are They Cutting Corners

It's not accurate to say that all affordable photographers lack skill; everyone starts somewhere, and many possess a keen eye for capturing moments. However, as you explore ways to save during your wedding planning, it's essential to consider that remarkably low-cost photographers may be compromising quality in other areas.  When you hire an experienced wedding photographer, you’re not just enlisting someone to press a button on a camera; you’re investing in their expertise and the thorough experience they'll provide throughout the entire process.  Your wedding day will be filled with unforgettable moments, and you shouldn't have to worry about your photographer amidst all the joy and emotions.

Here are some tips to help you find the perfect photographer for your wedding:

1.  Define the STYLE that resonates with you.  Consider whether you are drawn to classic posed shots or a more candid, documentary-style approach that captures genuine emotions and the essence of your day. Are you looking for natural, unposed moments, or do you prefer a more structured, traditional approach? Understanding your preferences will help you in selecting the right photographer.

2.  Build a rapport with your photographer.  This is crucial since they will be alongside you for a significant part of your day.  Ensure your personalities align and that you feel comfortable with them. While there may be pressure to choose someone familiar, remember that it's your special day. Select a photographer whose work captivates you. 3. Request to see a real wedding.  Don’t hesitate to ask for a full gallery of actual events that the photographer has captured. While curated portfolios may feature flawless stylized shots, real weddings reveal how well a photographer captures genuine moments and interactions. Seeing a complete gallery will give you valuable insights into their capabilities.

4.  Backup.  Backup equipment is essential for any photography service.  Always inquire with your photographer whether they utilize backup gear.  You wouldn’t want them arriving on your wedding day with only one camera body.  Consider the potential mishaps that could occur, such as a strap breaking or frequent use leading to shutter failures.  Is there a strategy in place for lens accidents, like a guest accidentally damaging the lens with a spilled drink?  It's important to note that professional photographers may invest over £3,000 on each camera body.  Regular upgrades, cleaning, and calibration are vital to maintain quality equipment.  While gear isn’t everything, the quality of lenses used can significantly impact image clarity and performance in adverse weather conditions.

5.  Insurance.  While discussing logistics, confirm if your photographer has insurance coverage.  A professional should be protected in case of equipment malfunction or any unexpected events involving guests and their gear… for example, if a light stand accidentally falls during the reception.

6.  Inquire about the DETAILS.  What does the photography package entail?  Are all images individually edited?  Is there an extra cost for additional editing?  Will your photographer offer digital files for sale beyond the original package price?  TIP: Ensure your photographer provides a contract.  Likewise, it’s crucial to have contracts with all your wedding vendors.

7. Turn around time.  This is a crucial aspect to understand.   If you’re considering a photographer with lower rates, perhaps they also have a full-time job and only shoot weddings on weekends. This can lead to turnarounds of several months, which might not meet your expectations. Do you want to wait 5-6 months to see your wedding photographs? The same applies to studios that advertise they shoot numerous weddings each season. Think about your experience—can your photographer provide personalized attention when they’re juggling multiple clients, or will your wedding just be another number on their list?

8.  Avoid the “Uncle Bob” scenario. If your uncle takes great sports photos for your cousins and you’re considering him for your wedding photography, reconsider!     Money saved, right??   Not necessarily. While you may save money, the results may not reflect your vision, leading to disappointment. Wedding photography is a specialized field that demands skill and experience. You don’t want to miss key moments or face challenges on such an important day. 9.  Pinterest is fantastic for inspiration, but please don't expect your photographer to replicate images from your boards precisely.     While some photographers may be willing, remember that you’re hiring a professional artist, and requesting exact copies can lead to unoriginal and stiff images. Trust your photographer's instincts when they suggest creative ideas—going slightly out of the box may yield remarkable results and memorable photographs.

Here is a Pet Peeve.

10.  Here’s a personal pet peeve I must mention. If you’re inquiring about wedding photography, don’t start by saying, “I’m looking for someone who doesn’t charge an arm and a leg.”  It’s understood that most people are on a budget, but DINGDANGIT, perceptions of what is expensive vary widely. Please be upfront about your budget. Check the photographer’s website for pricing information. Time is precious, and it’s best for both parties to determine compatibility early. If a photographer exceeds your budget and you cannot adjust your spending, it may be wise to seek alternatives.

I assure you that photographers with prices over £2,000 are not out to deceive. Many factors influence photography costs, including continuous education, technology updates, taxes, and the substantial time spent capturing and editing images. Think about whether you’re a Walmart shopper or prefer Nordstrom? Do you go to Great Clips for a haircut or choose a specialized salon with an experienced stylist?
